Statement one: The central idea of my concentration is the effect both light and shadows have on moving figures. Loosely, this translates to action shots of sports. I take a picture, and try to recreate it in a new way, finding the most defined shadows and rays of light. I try to find the best picture that will convey well with my theme. The medium I usually use is oil paint, because I love the thickness of the paint and the way it appears on canvas. Recently, I have been asked to step out of my comfort zone. Reluctantly, I agreed and started working with cut paper. So far, it has really opened my eyes to how many mediums I can use, and still have the same grip on my concentration idea.
To enhance my concentration idea, I have decided to branch out of oil medium and try new ways of expressing my concentration. So far, I have tried oil, and now cut paper. I will continue branching out and using mediums such as ink, charcoal, and chalk pastel.
I am "kicking it up a notch" with this piece because I have not done this before. It is a whole new medium for me to experiment with. With this piece, I am not only exploring the medium choice, but also the values of light and dark. Instead of using colors that match the picture, I am looking at the picture in black and white, and matching the colored paper with the correct value. It is crazy colorful, and definitely out of my comfort zone!
Statement two: The new idea for my concentration is to explore more ideas. Not to limit myself to sports photos, but to other figures as well, such as dogs or everyday people. I would also like to explore more mediums.
